Ditch & Switch – Lipstick

There’s so much excitement this week as my favorite company (and the only truly toxin free, high performing, and eco-friendly company) launched its ✨𝙉𝙀𝙒✨ Everluxe Lip Crayons yesterday, so I figured a super fun Ditch & Switch post was in order!!

I have read that women can end up eating a few pounds of lipstick over their lifetime. 🥴

That’s pretty scary when you think about how lip products typically contain some ugly ingredient offenders like…

❌ Petroleum

❌ Synthetic Fragrances/Flavors

❌ Mineral Oil

❌ Phenoxyethanol

❌ Parabens

❌ BHT

❌ Artificial Dyes

❌ Heavy Metals (alongside mineral pigments)

All of theses have links to being cancer causing carcinogens, endocrine disrupters, or organ system toxicants 👎🏼

I’m beyond grateful to have SAFE, high performance, and eco-friendly options to share!

CRUNCHI’S NEW EVERLUXE LIP CRAYON INGREDIENTS :

Ricinus Communis (Castor) Seed Oil*, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Glyceryl Ricinoleate, Euphorbia Cerifera (Candelilla) Wax / Euphorbia Cerifera Cera, Copernicia Cerifera (Carnauba) Wax / Copernicia Cerifera Cera*, Cetyl Alcohol, Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea) Butter*, Kaolin, Tocopherol, Ascorbyl Palmitate, May Contain (-/+): Mica, Titanium Dioxide (Cl 77891), Iron Oxides (Cl 77491, Cl 77492, Cl 77499), Manganese Violet (Cl 77742)

*Certified Organic Ingredients

These beauties launch to the public tomorrow, are available to Insiders now, and are free when you grab an enrollment collection this week!

If you want to grab some, you’ll want to use this link to be entered to win tons of rewards and get $10 off your first order of $50+ : http://ltl.is/v5ps7ft

What’s in your wine?

Who else likes to wind down after a long day with a glass of wine and some Disney+? The kid in me and the adult in me come together to enjoy a beverage and a movie 😅

Wine is something that has been in the back of my mind for a long time now… Not in a weird, “I can’t stop thinking about wine” way, but in a “I know my wine isn’t toxin free and I have to do something about it” kind of way.

In March of 2019 (I’m not kidding guys, this has been on my radar for awhile now 😁😁), I saw a post come up in a toxin free group about wine and the Roundup Weed Killer found in it. There was an article linked and I did not open it… I just couldn’t. I had given up my candles, my wax melts, changed up my diet completely, and thrown away hundreds of dollars worth of personal care products, but not my wine.

Well, now here we are two years later and I know I have to stop living in blissful ignorance.

Let’s review what’s in the type of wines you’re probably drinking…

Hello Pesticides

Most vineyards are sprayed with pesticides, herbicides, and fungicides to protect their crops from insects and infection. These chemicals get in the soil, the grapes, and ultimately in the wine you drink. Grapes are near the top of the “Dirty Dozen” foods sprayed with the most chemicals. You avoid these chemicals in your food (that’s why you shop for organic produce) and you should avoid them in your wine.

And unlike other fruits, which have a protective rind you don’t eat… grapes have a thin and porous skin. That means they absorb the chemicals sprayed on them. And because wine is concentrated from so many grapes (600-800 per bottle) – the end result is a condensed source of harmful cancer-promoting chemical compounds.

Dump in the Additives

In the US, wine producers can use 76 different additives in wine without disclosing any of them on the bottle. Things like:

defoaming agents

artificial coloring (virtually every red wine under $20 has the colorant “mega purple”)

extra sugar

high fructose corn syrup

ammonia

GMO bacteria and yeasts

Fining and Clarifying Agents like fish bladder, casein or polyvinyl-polpyr-rolidone (PVPP)

sulfites

and a lot more

There’s one additive called Velcorin that’s particularly insane. It must be applied by people with special training while wearing hazmat suits. It’s so toxic it will burn your skin if you touch it and will kill you if consumed before it’s broken down in the wine. But even after it breaks down, I’d rather not put that in my body…

What’s even worse than learning about all these additives used in winemaking is realizing that there is no labeling or transparency about their use. Wine has no ingredient label.

A wine can have 76 additives and you would have no idea!

Why do we passionately read the label for all the foods we buy and only purchase items with organic, clean ingredients, and yet we don’t pay any attention to what’s in our wine?!

Safe Option: Dry Farm Wines

If a Dry Farm Wine subscription isn’t in your budget, you can:

• Look for the USDA organic label on the bottle. This means that the grapes used to make the wine were grown organically, but does not mean the wine won’t contain other problematic additives.

• Ask the staff at your local Whole Foods or even a good wine store to point you to the organic or biodynamic wines, some of which won’t be labeled as such.

• When in doubt, choose wines from France, Switzerland, and Austria instead of California, as European wines are more likely to be organic and dry-farmed.

Organization Series

For those of you who don’t know me yet, my name is Jessica DeRico. I’m a hippy-ish mama to one 3 year old girl and another baby on the way, I’m into all things clean living, holistic health, and I’ve always thrived with structure, routines, systems, and organization. Like most of you, I’m just trying to get the most out of my day so I can be productive, present, happy, and healthy. Staying organized helps me do that!

This blog is typically about all things toxin free, but in honor of Spring cleaning time, I thought we could chat organization. I was recently asked to do a short series on this topic for someone else’s business group and everyone really enjoyed it. I do consider this a kind of “detoxing” because you’re detoxing your mind and environment to allow you to live healthier!

I’ve always been picked on (in a friendly way) by family and friends because of my strict schedules and organization techniques and I know what I do won’t work for everyone, but if I can help you organize your day/life at all, that would bring me joy!

I’LL START DROPPING TIPS SHORTLY, BUT TONIGHT I’D LOVE TO KNOW WHAT IS HARDEST FOR YOU:

🧥 Organizing Clothes/Household Items

🤯 Organizing Your Mind

📅 Organizing Your Day

Looking forward to getting to know you all better ❤ Feel free to share your struggles in the comment section. I’m sure every person struggles in some way with organization (I’ve been working on it my whole life and still have struggles).

Be A Blessing

Hey my gorgeous friends!

I’ve decided this year that I would once again like to 𝙱𝙴 𝙰 𝙱𝙻𝙴𝚂𝚂𝙸𝙽𝙶 to others. I am hoping and praying to be able to generously gift the NICU in the hospital where Adeline was born with holiday Blessing Bags in time for this holiday season.

My daughter, Adeline, was in the NICU for the beginning of her life and I will always remember the nurses in there who helped me through that time and took care of my newborn baby. My goal is to start with blessing the nurses and then if we have enough sponsored, to be a blessing to the mamas as well because I know first hand how hard it is to be a mama to a NICU baby and I know so many moms have it much much harder than I did. I can imagine with the world right now, that this is a more stressful time for the nurses and mamas than it has ever been and I hope to be able to bring a little light into their day.

I am so excited to once again put together bags and will be consciously selecting toxin free items as opposed to simply whatever I can find.

I am asking for you to please consider sponsoring one (or more!) of these nurses/mamas at $25, which is the cost of one Gentle Cleansing Bar, plus funds to put towards the contents of the bag. I will purchase the other items for the bags (personal care, toiletries, cozy socks, tea bags, adult coloring books, etc,). AND if you have a small business and would like to contribute a donation (which your own clients can sponsor just like we’re doing here), please reach out to me. I have seen clothing shops donate leggings, oil reps donate lavender roller bottles, and I have a friend sending toxin free candles for the bags, the possibilities are endless. Just let me know if you’d like to contribute something!

There are 38 NICU nurses total and I would love to be able to bless each one of them, and even have extras for some of the mamas. Lofty goal, I know. But I believe in this cause.

If you are willing to sponsor, please comment here in this post or email me to sponsor one (or more!) of these ladies who need to feel loved 💖 at derico.jessica@gmail.com

Payment can be made by cash, check, PayPal, Venmo, or FB Pay. I’m shooting to have all slots filled this week so that I can get them ordered and made up ASAP.

✨There is a lot of darkness in the world right now. Let’s be the light!✨

Hair it is…

Let’s talk hair care.

I’ll be honest, I’ve only tried one toxin free shampoo and conditioner but because it took me SO long to find it, and because I was greenwashed twice before finding a truly toxin free brand, I knew I needed to share!

I found an article from January of this year listing “The Best Shampoos for Every Type of Hair” and dug into these recommendations a bit and you can imagine that what I found wasn’t pretty.

Some common ingredients were:
🚫PEG – While PEGs can be mild irritants, they’re less than desirable primarily because they help traffic funky chemicals across your epidermis, including a slug of impurities they’re often contaminated with. 😱According to a report in the International Journal of Toxicology by the Cosmetic Ingredient Review, pollutants found in various PEG compounds include ethylene oxide (used to manufacture mustard gas), 1,4-dioxane, polycyclic aromatic compounds, and heavy metals (lead, iron, cobalt, nickel, cadmium, arsenic).” 😳
❌ Phenoxyethanol – used as a preservative in cosmetic products to limit bacterial growth. Skin exposure to phenoxyethanol has been linked to allergic reactions ranging from eczema and hives to anaphylaxis. Infants exposed to phenoxyethanol can experience a depressed central nervous system leading to a decreased appetite, difficulty waking, skin color change, damaged DNA, and limpness of extremities.
❌ 𝙎𝙇𝙎 – often contaminated with 1,4 dioxane, a byproduct of the manufacturing process that is “possibly carcinogenic to humans” and may also cause negatives effects in the kidneys, liver and central nervous system, according to the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health.
🚫 Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA): This preservative is used to help foods retain color, but it also irritates the skin, causes skin rashes and even asthma. It is on the FDA’s toxicity watchlist, which you know can’t be a good sign (especially considering how many other toxins they let slide).

to decorate or not to decorate?

One of my favorite holiday family traditions has always been decorating my mom’s Christmas cookies with the family. We just did this today in fact! 😅 What I don’t love now that I know better… decorating those cookies, that we’re obviously going to eat, with a dose of chemicals derived from petroleum.

Fifteen million pounds of food dye is used every year in the U.S. which is a 5X increase within the past 60 years.

Guys, these dyes are made from the same petroleum that fuels our vehicles…

think about that.

This is exactly why I often talk about voting with your dollars. Why are we still buying this crap??

So, not only are these dyes made in a lab with chemicals derived from petroleum (which also happens to be used in gasoline, diesel fuel, asphalt, and tar), they’ve also been linked to long-term health problems including cancer. Food products containing artificial dye are actually required to have a warning label in the U.K. These dyes have also been shown to increase hyperactivity in children. In fact I have heard several moms who have had children with ADHD be completely “cured” just by cutting out synthetic food dyes completely.

You bet your bottom dollar I brought our toxin free food coloring to Christmas cookie decorating this year. I see absolutely no reason to feed this stuff to Addie when there are safe options I can use instead!

We ate, We shopped, Now let’s GIVE

Now that the craziness of Thanksgiving/Black Friday/Cyber Monday is over, let’s reflect and give back to those less fortunate than us. What better way to do that than with Blessing Bags! Contributions can be as low as $10, as high as $54, or anywhere in between ❤️

I have ten young mamas who could use the extra love and support during this season of giving. If I get more than ten sponsors, the remaining bags will be donated to a local shelter for other women who could use some light in their lives. I sincerely appreciate all the support in this year’s blessing bag drive!

👇Details👇
————-————-————-————-—————

😍 The cost to sponsor a bag is between $10 and $54 as you will choose which toxin free product/item you’d like me to put in your bag. Then, I will buy the other items going in the bags such as: tumblers, fuzzy socks, tissues, chocolates, notebook, pens, planners, puzzle books, etc.

Last year I was able to donate five bags. I’d love to DOUBLE it this year and donate at least TEN bags so I can give to a young mom’s group with ten mamas in it.

If you’d like to be part of this blessing, please reach out to me or head here for all the info and tips on Raising a Clean family and living a Toxin Free life! https://forms.gle/JSp9Adnq5LMLSKDeA
